DStv

DStv is a broadcast service of MultiChoice, itself owned by Naspers. Established in 1995, the service has since evolved from a satellite and terrestrial broadcaster to an online streaming service provider as well.

DStv is massive in Africa, south of the Sahara, with a strong footprint across over 40 African countries. While it is stronger in Anglophone Africa, it also has a strong presence in Francophone and Portuguese speaking African countries.

The service offers various bouquet of services, targeting varying segments of the market. The highest is DStv Premium (with over 150 TV and radio channels) while the lowest is DStv Easy.

DStv is very strong with content in Africa. Its in-house channels like MNet and Africa Magic typically own the license to foreign content (movies, TV series, sports etc) in addition to one’s commissioned by DStv.

With its traditional business model being under threat from online streaming services like Netflix, DStv is adapting to the market with its own Netflix-like streaming service known as Showmax. There are also reports of an online-only offer by DStv, from the year 2019.

A broadcast industry that includes independent radio/TV studios, has developed around its headquarters in Randburg, South Africa.
