Nigeria’s only subsea cable outside Lagos, two years on

The 2Africa landing at Qua Iboe promised a second internet gateway for Nigeria. Two years on, the fibre is reaching Uyo, and the routing data still cannot prove the traffic followed.

By Equinix’s own count, Nigeria has landed eight subsea cables. Only one of them comes ashore outside Lagos.

That one is 2Africa, which reached the Qua Iboe beach in Akwa Ibom State in February 2024. On 10 August, MainOne said it had extended metro fibre into the newly upgraded Victor Attah International Airport in Uyo, Akwa Ibom, the latest increment of a build-out it promised when the cable came ashore.

Why one landing outside Lagos matters

Concentration is the risk. In March 2024, a month after the Qua Iboe landing, an underwater rockslide off West Africa cut several subsea cables at once. The Internet Society counted 13 African countries affected, from degraded service to near-total outages.

Nigeria absorbed that event with almost every international circuit terminating in one city. A second coastal entry point in a different state is the structural answer to that problem, which is why the Qua Iboe landing carried weight beyond the ribbon-cutting.

2Africa is a Meta-led system with a design capacity above 100 Tbps, the same order as Google’s Equiano. We covered the cable’s announcement in 2020 and, more recently, CSquared buying 2Africa capacity specifically to cut West African cable risk.

What was promised in 2024

When the cable landed, MainOne said it would build a terrestrial metro fibre network across Akwa Ibom and the wider South-South, naming Port Harcourt, Bonny Town and Onne as first targets, with Uyo, Eket and Oron to follow.

The company framed the landing as the first submarine cable system in Nigeria outside Lagos, and said the fibre would address distribution constraints across the southern and north-central regions.

The 10 August announcement is that the commitment is reaching Uyo. “Akwa Ibom’s digital future is moving from plans to progress,” MainOne said, adding that the rollout “continues across Akwa Ibom, reaching further into the state’s commercial and residential clusters.”

What Equinix has said since

Equinix bought MainOne for $320 million in 2022. In April 2025, Wole Abu, Managing Director for West Africa at Equinix, wrote that the company would open PR1, its first Port Harcourt data centre, describing it as a landing site for 2Africa and “the first Nigerian cable landing outside of Lagos.”

That phrasing sits oddly beside MainOne’s own account of the cable reaching Qua Iboe in February 2024, and the two have not been reconciled publicly. The likeliest reading is that the beach landing and the data centre that terminates the capacity are separate pieces of the same project.

Abu also set out the scale of the gap the fibre is meant to close. Nigeria’s broadband penetration stood at roughly 45% in January 2025 against a national target of 70%, and he cited a World Bank estimate that the country has about 35,000 km of broadband cable and needs 95,000 km more. Equinix has announced $140 million of investment over two years to expand regional facilities, alongside its continued expansion in Lagos.

What the routing data shows, and what it cannot

tech.africa operates its own BGP route collectors. They provide a partial but independent view of how MainOne fits into Nigeria’s routing, without relying on any operator’s self-description.

As of 10 August 2026, we observe 136 distinct network adjacencies for AS37282, MainOne’s main autonomous system. Ranked by the number of prefixes seen across each link, the two largest are the global carriers Cogent and Lumen. Behind them sit a long tail of Nigerian providers: Cobranet, Inq. Digital Nigeria, Tizeti, Bitflux, ipNX, VDT Communications and Smile, alongside Angola Cables.

That profile is consistent with a wholesale carrier whose capacity reaches a wide slice of the Nigerian market, which is how a new landing would benefit anyone beyond MainOne’s own customers.

What the data cannot show is what would settle the question. MainOne routes its Nigerian business under a single autonomous system, so BGP offers no way to separate traffic entering at Qua Iboe from traffic entering at Lagos. Public routing data reveals topology, not geography, and inferring a network’s location from where its addresses are registered is a well-known way to reach the wrong answer. Whether Nigeria’s international traffic is genuinely diversifying away from Lagos is not yet independently measurable from the outside.

What is still unconfirmed

MainOne’s announcement provides no capacity figure for the airport link, no service date, and no named executive. The company’s press newsroom has published nothing on the South-South build since January 2025, so the rollout’s pace largely rests on its social media posts.

Neither MainOne nor Equinix has published an update on when PR1 entered or will enter service, how much of the promised metro fibre is now lit, or how much 2Africa capacity is actually being sold into the South-South. Those three figures would settle most of what is unclear here.

Until they arrive, the honest summary is that Nigeria’s second gateway exists in concrete and glass, and is being extended one building at a time, while the question of whether it has changed how the country reaches the internet remains open. The answer will show up in routing long before it shows up in a press release, and as Lagos exchanges keep upgrading, the comparison is worth watching.
