Forum Moderators Wanted Urgently by Nairaland

I chuckled to myself this morning when I read this headline on the homepage of Nairaland (the leading Nigerian Internet discussion forum): “The Nairaland Forum Is Now On A Break!” I prayed silently, “Lord, let this be just one of those pranks by this Seun guy. Lord let this not be true”. Okay, those were not my exact words, but I sincerely wished it was not true. Alas, it was true!

The Nairaland Forum Is Now On A Break!
« on: Yesterday at 10:33:51 PM »

Hello guys,

I’m the admin and sole moderator of this forum.
I have tried, but I cannot keep up with you guys.
I need great moderators, but I can’t find any.
The more I try to explain, the more abuse I get.

Therefore I’m going on a break, for a few days.
Or a few weeks.  I’m not sure.  Maybe months.
I won’t return until i get 3-5 super moderators.
The Forum is also on a break: no more posting.

If you want to recommend someone to be a
moderator, just mail me: [email protected]

Bye bye.

Well, fair enough. I had always wondered how this gentleman had been able to keep up with the herculean task of single-handedly moderating a discussion forum that has over 150,000 members. Now that the forum is effectively freezed, I feel like something is missing in my daily life. Of course, I read more on Nairaland, and post less. I don’t log on to Nairaland every day. There are many others who are by-far more active on that forum who would feel the pinch much more than I do but I feel the pinch all the same.

I’m therefore amplifying the announcement that Nairaland needs competent moderators. You can mail Seun to discuss your remuneration and other issues. There are wide [wild?] speculations that Seun earns thousands of dollars monthly from ad revenue [$5,000 to $10,000 would be a fair guess]. So this is your chance to get some share of that moolah!

  1. Hmn, much as I am tempted to agree with you Kayode, that this particular thread informed his decision, I beg to differ.

One thing is sure though, Nairaland needs to be effectively policed. There are way too many scammers using the forum to perpetrate their evil scams. It is also possible that the authorities hold Seun responsible if he does nothing to see to it that the forum is well moderated.

His move so far is a step in the right direction.

  2. There is no kind of Business that is posted on Nairaland that is not openly advertized on our daily newspapers. From HYIPs to Forex seminars organized to swindle the members of the public. We even have everyday businesses that do not deliver after collecting payment advertized on the dailies.

Please can you let me know of one case, where the authorities have held a media house responsible? Agreed that seun has got to take some measures to uphold the reputation of his forum. However, I do not think an indefinite Holiday is warranted.

If it was on the grounds of technicality, I would concur, since nairaland is long overdue for an upgrade. I find his present forum platform rather vulnerable, especially to spammers. Moving over to Vbulletin would not be a bad idea, given that it has some degree of spammer protection.

I just pray seun does not throw way the massive stream of traffic that has taken him years to build. As it is apparent that Nigerians will settle for another online hangout spot if the nairaland holiday lingers for long.

  3. Very strange I never saw this; but thanks David, because it is ‘impossible’ for Seun to go ‘offline’ and abdicate the Naira ‘throne’.

I am not also surprised that he came back in less than 3 days to reverse that ‘decision’.

The phenomenal success of Nairaland forum would naturally bring its own hiccups, but that burden is not enough to swallow the positive momentum which that darling forum is generating daily.

Let me assure you, that young lad would never commit a web suicide, forget about the ‘pranks’.

I know quite a little about web relevance to be convinced that we would not be ‘privileged’ to write the obituary of Nairaland… no, not in the next 5 to 10 years!

  7. I believe Seun makes a lot from the forum and he should pay the moderators. There is a lot of scammers on the site and even spammers and it is not easy to moderate a huge site like NL.This is a great news and i like it that Nigerians are trying. I just came around this site NigeriaMessageboard.com which is really well designed. I believe that the UI is more professional than other forums i have seen in Nigeria. I spoke to the owner and i was told the site just started this year (July). Already with over 2k messages , social network features etc
