Ghanaians eating maggots?

A headline jumped at me this afternoon from one of the papers displayed at a newspaper stand nearby: “Ghanaians eating maggots?

I chuckled to myself, thinking this was just another political gymnastic by one of Ghana’s die-hard politicians. On my way home, I stopped at a favourite newspaper joint to grab a copy of the latest BBC Focus on Africa magazine and saw this headline again. This time, I moved closer to read.

Well, I later saw the full story on Ghanaweb and this is the first two paragraphs:

Accra, June 13 (Crusading Guide) — Creamy and crispy Malt n Milk, Cleo Digestive, Wafer and Sweety biscuits are hot confectioneries for children and adults in the homes of most Ghanaians and other African countries. Cocktail parties buffet, wedding ceremonies ad other social gatherings, are spiced up with these tasty and nutritionally rich biscuits.

Little do people know, however, that when they eat these biscuits, they are indirectly gulping down roasted maggots, worm, weevils, termites and fungi. A company, Eurofood (Gh) Limited, situated off the Spintex Road in Accra, is where these unwholesome biscuits and others like Anibal, Bolo, Fitini, Baba Junior, Mobile, are produced.

Just when I thought this was serious enough, one of the commentators on the news item using the alias kobolo, posted:

I’ve been eating these biscuits and they taste very good. I have not gotten ill yet. The main thing is in the cooking . If they are cooked long enough no maggot would survive. I will still eat the biscuits cos they taste very good, maggots or no maggots. While in boarding school beetles floated on our beans stew and we still ate it and survived. Come on people forget the scaremongering. As long as you cook long its okay..

Another poster using a nickname abena added a comment:

Such irresponsibility of factories, firms etc can only happen in poor and for that matter in third world countries where the whole system is chaotic.

When one hasn’t travelled out of Ghana, one assumes everything is ok in Ghana. But if you live in the Us or Western Europe, you realize how chaotic it is on the African continent and for that matter Ghana.
