South African community broadcasters and prospective applicants have one final week to attend the regulator’s provincial workshops on community television licences and spectrum applications.
The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) is running the workshops in support of its Invitation to Apply for Community Television Broadcasting Service (CTBS) licences and Radio Frequency Spectrum licences, published in Government Gazette No. 53934 on 8 January 2026.
Remaining sessions
Four provincial workshops have already taken place on 12 and 14 May 2026, covering the Northern Cape, Mpumalanga, North West and Western Cape. Eight further sessions, all running 09:00 to 16:00 SAST, remain scheduled:
- 26 May: Thohoyandou (Limpopo), East London (Eastern Cape), Bloemfontein (Free State), Newcastle (KwaZulu-Natal)
- 28 May: Polokwane (Limpopo), Gqeberha (Eastern Cape), Kroonstad (Free State), Durban (KwaZulu-Natal)
Who should attend
The sessions are open to “members of the media, interested stakeholders and prospective applicants”, ICASA said. The workshops follow an initial briefing on 6 May 2026 and a virtual engagement on 25 March 2026.
South Africa’s existing community television sector includes Soweto TV, Cape Town TV, Bay TV and 1KZN TV, each licensed under the existing CTBS framework. The current Invitation to Apply represents the regulator’s first multi-channel community-licensing window in several years.
