68 Kenyan women have been selected for the 2022/23 cohort of the Women Techsters Fellowship, a free technology training programme run by the Technology for Social Change and Development Initiative (Tech4Dev).
The fellowship received 703 applications from Kenya alone. Across 15 African countries, 1,466 beneficiaries were admitted from a pool of 14,509 applicants, a selection rate of roughly 10%.
Country breakdown
Nigeria led the intake with 1,167 fellows from 10,912 applicants. Kenya ranked second with 68, followed by Ghana (48), Ethiopia (32), Uganda (29), South Africa (24), and Egypt (24). Smaller cohorts were admitted from Mozambique, Madagascar, Tanzania, Algeria, Sudan, Angola, Morocco, and the DRC.
Fellows will be trained in mobile development, software development, product design, product management, cybersecurity, data science, AI engineering, blockchain, and mixed reality.
Bridging the gender gap in tech
The Women Techsters initiative aims to bridge the digital skills divide between men and women across Africa. The programme targets women aged 16 to 40 and provides experiential learning and upskilling at no cost.
“The selection process was rigorous as the programme requires commitment and dedication from beneficiaries,” Blessing Ashi, Women Techsters Initiative Lead, said at the announcement press conference in Lagos, Nigeria.
