Erik introduces iHub @ Skunkworks in Nairobi, Kenya

I was privileged to be at last night’s Skunkworks meeting. The 2-hour meeting held at KCCT Teleposta Towers focused on a new project aimed at physically bringing the tech community in Nairobi & environs together.

The audience included staff from Kenyan Youth Fund, staff from Kenyan ICT Board, freelancers, application developers, 4 members of the iHub project, a journalist amongst others.

Erik of Ushaidi spoke at lenght about the new iHub project. The following were extracted from his answers to questions to the audience. iHub would amongst other things:

  • serve as an incubator for entrepreneurs, in a secured environment
  • offer basic infrastructure
  • link Venture Capitalists with potential entrepreneurs
  • both open-source and proprietary projects are welcome
  • serve as a platform for problem-solving
  • focused on techies
  • be based on meritocracy, guys doing cool stuff would be given preferential treatment
  • host IT-related events and meetings
  • bring people interested in tech together, around Nairobi

  1. The iHUB does it involve any person who want to learn? In my case I have a diploma in an ICT related field. It has been my desire to learn web design but due to some financial constraints I have not been able to live my dream. Is it possible to learn from the people involved?

  2. @jeniffer: To me the ihub will be a way of accelerating technology advancement in Kenya and maybe offer guys opportunities to learn. Web design is one of the simplest courses you can find around. You dont even require advanced computer knowledge. The basic is more than enough. All you require is passion, an artistic mind, the ability to judge.Dont complain about finance. There are alot free resources available on the net. All you need is a PC to do your practice….

  3. I have the passion 4 computer. I have never been in a computer class but i can do most of the basic things with it. I want 2 learn more but deu to financial problems am unable, is it possible for you to help.
