SMART TV, Ghana’s latest digital terrestrial television service launches

SMART TV, a new digital terrestrial television service was launched today by Next Generation Broadcasting (NGB) in collaboration with Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC). The service would witness a commercial roll-out come May 2010.

Smart TV

According to Citi FM Online:

The station would offer both pay-TV service and free-to-air service of existing local stations on the Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) network.
SMART TV will initially air in Accra and Kumasi and would later be extended to other regions in Ghana in the near future.
The TV station belongs to a Swedish multinational company called Next Generation Broadcasting (NGB) which is partnering Fox International Channel as the only platform to provide Fox Entertainment in Ghana.

Pricing for the SMART TV digibox would start from GHC 89.

The features of the new service as advertised by SMART TV are as follows:

Smart mix of local and international content
Affordable monthly subscription of GHC19
Convenient and easy to install
Crystal clear picture and sound quality
Electronic Programme Guide to plan your viewing

The TV channels advertised are:

Foreign: FOX, Showtime, Star, TRACE Tropical, Setanta Africa, BBC News, HiNolly, HomeBase, GOD TV, Kids
Local: NET2, Viasat1, TV3 Ghana, GTV and TV Africa.

Smart TV is set to launch in Kenya and Uganda later this year.

Please for about closed to two years now in the Ashanti Region the signal has been taken off, your office here has been closed. l was one of the numerous agent who distributed the smart tv here in kumasi. No call for alarm, No awareness. it’s seems like you just taken us for granted, took our money then left just like that….. Your fone lines has been disconnected as well…. Please where ever Smart tv company are the decoders is useless for us, tell us where we should dump it because the Peoples of the Ashanti kingdom don’t want your services anymore.   Hello Kwakye, You need a good digital antenna raised up at least 6 feet above your roof to get the whole Smart TV now skyy plus.
  Six new channels have been added now. The cost of the antenna is Ghc25.00 and is available at Cadmus Osu. Hope you get it right.

am very disappointed buying Smart Tv decoder because there is absolutely noting good in that box, because how can you box other companies free channel and our local channels and sell to the public.
please scrap all that wasteful channels from the box and let me suggest an idea for you before it is too late and before people get to know about it. because Smart Tv for now stand no chance in comparing to any digital decoder anywhere.

  Whoever is the boss of smart tv should bow down his head in shame for rendering a bad service to the nation. what are they doing ? they only take people’s money & don’t do anything to improve the service. most of the stations are not working, not even the local stations & for a while now, i thought it would be improved & would get better, but rather getting worse & now they’ve taken KISS TV off, which is my main reason for buying this decoder. why ? ? ?

Look smart tv is as useless as anything u can imagine,especially that their HOMEBASE station, it if full of repetition programes. Can you imagine only 3 films are shown on this station for the past 4 days, infact it is a disgrace to GTV and the management of smart tv. I wonder if this station can get money to pay it workers,b’cos no businessman or woman will even advertise on this nertwork. Look it is only HI NOLLY that is doing well. People buy it b’cos it is does use a ”dish”,but look is the same as watching the locall tv station. PLS STOP SELLING THIS TO PEOPLE this is TV ROBBERING. WHAT IS THIS? aaaahh !!! I have two tvs. One connected to multi tv and the other to smart tv but my technician has interconnected the two so I can watch either multi or smart tv on any of the tvs. The two tvs are in different rooms.

  Multi TV is on satellite while Smart TV is terrestrial. They are different and should be able to work side-by-side without problems.
  About your 2nd issue, the solution lies in investing in a motorized satellite dish system; if you are willing to invest in one. The motorized system assists with tuning between different satellites (in space).

Why, you’ve fail us soooooooooooo much. We the user of smart tv were expecting to watch the champion league yesterday, but we couldn’t. Why smart tv. If you can’t show us the champion league, Laliga, English premier league, then I think you are not doing us good.
Isports and gtvsports were yesterday showing dead matches instead of Champions league. is that how you treats your clans. It was only VISAT who were showing Inter’s match. And visat is a station that everybody in ghana gets to watch provided you have a tv.
I’m shame of the managements.

Big Shame to all managements of so call smart tv. I was thinking that you are the people going to give us better service, not knowing that you rather kill us. I bought it because of live matches but not dead matches. shame on you, that we did not get to watch the champion league.
I have regreeted for buying the smart TV. so i urge all users of smart tv to stop using it and go for muiti or dstv for better service. Through me i had about 16 people who bought your so call Smart TV. And i am the same person who is going to tell them to convert to multi or dstv to watch better programs, especially football(The champions leagues, English premier leagues, Laliga, etc.
I don’t even know the use of your gtv sports plus and Isports. Meanwhile yesterday multi tv and dstv where showing Barcelona’s match.

Most of us have a problem when it comes to appreciating quality service, we’re too stereotype.
Every organisation faces challenges in the beginning but for one to be a winner, he’ll have to stand the test of time.
I believe Smart TV has a lot to offer its viewers. DSTV did not attain its status in a day and let’s face facts, Multi Tv doesnot come an inch close to Smart TV in terms of content, clarity, sound and picture quality.
Smart TV is here to stay, they sure are making it happen.

  It appears Smart TV is broadcasting BBC World and GOD TV, unenecrypted and that explains why flat-screen TVs with in-built DVB-T tuners can receive these two channels. It has nothing to do with Multi TV.
  You would need to subscribe to Smart TV, to receive the other channels from them.
  Also, there is no reason for you not to receive the regular free-to-air Ghanaian TV channels.

I agree perfectly with you, Kofi. i have both Multi TV and Smart TV. Now i dont even watch my Multi TV again, it is so boring. As i speak i Star, the gossip channel on Smart TV. When my kids return from school they are always glued to Kidsco. Smart is a much better option.

Multi TV promised us they were going to show the English Premier League but they did not. at least they have one EPL mactch a week and this weekend they showed all the Italian Serie A matches. they also showed the Belgian league, Scotish League and others. to me it is still much better than Multi. I also love their musical channel Kiss and the movie channel Silver.

Smart TV is a disgrace to the Ghanaian Corporate Community. They lied to me to buy one of their receivers promising 18 channels. Better customer service. Poor me, only the local channels, even with that, Metro TV does not come. What is the problem. I think is good you treat your customers very well. I petty myself for not buying Multi TV. I was told 7weeks ago that the rest of the channels will be coming this week. In fact this is the 8th Week.
If you are the BOSS of SMART TV then I am sorry you are not doing a good work.

I bought a decoder of Smart Tv a few weeks ago and my wife is always fighting with me because to her I have thrown my money away. The reason why my wife is saying this is that Smart Tv has nothing to offer except the old free on air TV stations. Even they cannot produce their own advertised TV stations. i live in asawasi in ksi. i hv a total of 28 channels on my smart tv. 6 free ghanaian stations, 8 no picture channels and 6 card needed channels. meanwhile my card is correctly inserted into the slot but yet the msg is “this channel is coded and needs a card”.
wow, 6 + 8 + 6 = 20(uncalled for channels)
28 – 20 = 8(only channels left)
out of the 8 remaining channels i hv, 3 which keep hibernating which leaves me very few as options. i tot i was subscribing for more channel tv. i need help urgently.

  for now their pay channels are free. they coding the pay channels, for the problem you have “this channel is code and needs a card” is because you haven’t paying for the subcribe channels. after finish with their coding and you starting paying your monthly fees you will recieves your pay channels back but for the free channels you will recieve them whether you pay or not because it is free.

COMPARISM SHOULD NEVER BE MADE BETWEEN MULTI TV AND SMART TV. MULTI TV SOLEY OPERATE ON RECORDED PROGRAMS WHILES SMART TV HAS LIVE PROGRAMS FOR ITS CHERISHED CUSTOMERS BUT ANYWAY, THEY ALL HAVE THEIR TARGET MARKETS. YOU MAKE A WISE CHOICE.

YOU HAVE TO BE ENLIGHTENED. THERE IS A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PAY TV AND FREE TO AIR CHANNELS.
SMART TV LIKE DSTV, THE DEFUNCT GBS AND SKYY DIGITAL ARE PAY TV BECAUSE THE SHOW PREMIUM CHANNELS WHICH ARE PAID TO BE RECIEVED.
MULTI TV IS PURELY FREE CHANNEL TV WHICH ARE ABSOLUTLY FREE.
THE CHOICE IS YOURS CHOOSE WHAT YOU CAN OFFORD.

smart tv is a stitch too late. currently l have 17 active channels on my strong srt4669x reciever tracking multi tv and 8 test transmission channels from infinity. use astra 2abd satelite at 28.2e. smart should have been free. do they think they are wiser than the guys at multi tv?

  well Darlington i think i should answer dis Q. for Oluniyi, multi tv is free yes but what abt their services… so poor, quality 5% u knw why?? cus they hve a huge network problem to which no one is complaining why cus its a cheap offer they are offering us so u can’t complain. u hve to pay for quality service so they always come in handy.

Why not making it free monthly subscription after you have acquired the bouquet like Multi TV Ghana. I wonder if they will really make profit…

    I think the introduction of SMART TV to we Ghanaians is welcome news.The question is how of can afford the monthly bill for that of Dstv.I would be glad if more epl matches will be showed.

  Smart TV is a terrestrial service that’s starting from Accra and Kumasi for now. I doubt it’d ever cover Ghana 100%.
