Apple has launched iPhone 17e, its most affordable iPhone 17 model, with pre-orders now open and availability from 11 March. In South Africa, iStore is offering the handset from R14,599 for the 256 GB model, with trade-in deals bringing the price as low as R7,099.

The device runs on Apple’s A19 chip, built on 3-nanometre technology, paired with a 16-core Neural Engine optimised for Apple Intelligence features in iOS 26. It also introduces the C1X cellular modem, which Apple says delivers up to twice the speed of the C1 modem in the previous iPhone 16e.

Display, camera, and design

iPhone 17e features a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display with 1,200 nits peak brightness (HDR) and Ceramic Shield 2, which Apple claims offers three times better scratch resistance than its predecessor. The body is made from aerospace-grade aluminium with an IP68 water resistance rating.

The camera system centres on a 48 MP Fusion sensor with optical-quality 2x telephoto. It supports 4K Dolby Vision video recording at 60 fps with Spatial Audio, portrait mode with next-generation depth mapping, and Night mode. The handset comes in black, white, and soft pink with a matte finish.

South Africa pricing and trade-in

iStore, South Africa’s only Apple Premium Partner, is handling local pre-orders. Base storage has doubled to 256 GB, with a 512 GB option at R19,499. Customers who trade in an existing device can reduce the outlay considerably.

Contract upgrades are available through Vodacom, MTN, Telkom, and Cell C via iStore’s platform. Every purchase includes iCare Plus (valued at R1,999), which adds an extra year of warranty, screen repair cover, and a guaranteed buy-back value. Customers who pre-order through the iStore app receive priority allocation.

iPhone 17e replaces the iPhone SE as the entry point to the iPhone ecosystem. It sits below the standard iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Air, and iPhone 17 Pro models in Apple’s 2026 lineup, but shares the same A19 chip architecture and Apple Intelligence capabilities. Globally, the device starts at $599.
