Emirates Airbus A380 in updated livery

The first Emirates A380 fitted with Starlink Wi-Fi has returned to Dubai service, kicking off an accelerated retrofit that will progressively reach the African routes the double-decker still flies.

Five African cities on the A380 map

Emirates currently operates the A380 to five destinations across Africa. The carrier flies the type to Cairo three times a day, with daily A380 service to Johannesburg and Casablanca, and twice-daily A380 rotations to Mauritius. Cape Town will receive an A380 rotation during the northern summer of 2026 on one of its two existing daily frequencies, alongside a new daily Airbus A350 service starting in July. African A380 deployment is described by the trade press as “fairly light compared to Europe”, but it remains the densest A380 footprint of any non-European region outside the Gulf.

Emirates has not specified the order in which individual A380s will be retrofitted with Starlink, so it is not yet clear when each African rotation will gain the new connectivity. Passengers on Cairo, Johannesburg, Casablanca and Mauritius services should expect a phased introduction during 2026 as aircraft cycle through the upgrade.

2 Gbps across the cabin

Installation and certification of the inaugural Starlink-fitted aircraft was completed at Newquay in the United Kingdom. Each A380 carries three Starlink antennas, which Emirates says will deliver more than 2 Gbps of total bandwidth across the cabin, a roughly thousand-fold improvement on the airline’s first-generation onboard internet that offered less than 1 Mbps.

The service will be free for passengers in all cabin classes, with sign-up available on personal devices. Emirates plans to extend the offering to live television streaming, initially on personal devices and later integrated into seat-back screens.

Configuration tuned for the double-decker

The A380’s higher passenger load and twin-deck layout required a different configuration to the carrier’s Boeing 777-300ER. The wide-body received additional wireless access points and a third antenna to support consistent speeds across both decks. Optimised inter-deck integration is intended to provide a continuous Wi-Fi experience, although speeds will vary depending on usage levels and device capability.

Rollout schedule

Subsequent installations will be carried out at Emirates Engineering facilities in Dubai. The airline already operates 25 Boeing 777-300ERs equipped with Starlink, and says more than 650,000 customers have flown on Starlink-enabled flights to date. The connectivity upgrade forms part of a broader Emirates retrofit programme: the airline said 93 aircraft have been refurbished, with new Premium Economy cabins, refreshed Business and First Class interiors, and an inflight entertainment system carrying more than 6,500 channels.
