Oyo State Government domain name expired and displaying Google Ads.

oyostatewebsite It is commonplace for the different tiers of government and their institutions in Nigeria, to be using generic top-level domains, especially .com, .net and .org I find this completely un-acceptable. I am of the opinion that there should be a legislation, forcing the Presidency and all other government institutions, to use .ng domains.

Note that Nigeria Direct (the official portal of the Federal government of Nigeria – nigeria.gov.ng) has a .ng domain and so does Lagos State (lagosstate.gov.ng) and some other state government websites.

.ng is the country-code top-level domain (cc-TLD) for the Federal Republic of Nigeria and has not witnessed any wide-spread use. Indeed, most companies, organizations and individuals in Nigeria, already use .com domains before the Federal government could standardize the use of .ng domains, in 2006.

A case in point is Oyo State. The government website was at oyostate.gov.ng Later moved to oyostategov.com (for whatever reason). Now the .com domain name has expired and the official website of the government of Oyo State is displaying Google Ads.

This is shameful. What do you think?

    I think it is shameful and unfortunately there are a few state organisations like them. As usual they jumped on the bandwagon, and took their eyes of the ball thereafter.

    I agree completely with everything stated here-in, plus some. To prove my point, please read my open letter to President YarAdua on the need for using .ng for ALL government websites’ domains. The letter was posted on “OnlineNigeria.com” and you can read the same letter at http://www.KebbiState.com, under the Topic “Nigeria” tittled “Standardizing Nigerian States Official Internet Domain Names.”

    If you google search the title of the article, you will also be able to find and read that informative article. It is a “must-read” for anyone who is interested in seeing Nigeria take a lead (at least in Africa) in today’s information age.

    You’re hardly setting an example with the .com on your own domain. If you were to change it to davidajao.ng maybe the government would take you more seriously?

    The .ng registry is unreliable Ben Martin. See Nigerian cc-TLD (.ng domains) – Something is definitely wrong. Read ALL the comments on that blog post as well, then you’d understand.

    You cannot imagine how seriously I battled with my conscience from the beginning as to whether to use a .com or .com.ng

    Everything is up to the Federal Government of Nigeria. Not me. 🙄

    I just saw this post today and I feel very sad even considering the fact Oys State is my very own state. Anyway, The greed of money has swallowed up all the officer who are suppose to monitor this website, i gues to them it doesn’t matter.

    Anyway, Nigeria will get there someday.
