I have had to blog a few times about domain names of important Nigerian institutions expiring. I never imagined that a day would come when I would blog about a bank not renewing its domain name on time.
I am talking about UBA PLC’s ubaplc.com domain name. I wanted to check their website this morning for a list of their branches in Nigeria and was shocked when my web browser was redirected to some external page full of ads and a statement showing the domain expired.
According to the ABOUT US page on their website:
Today, the consolidated UBA is the largest financial services institution in West Africa with a balance sheet size in excess of One Trillion Naira (under USD8b) and more than six million (6m) customer accounts, operating out of the 2 most vibrant economies in the sub-region – Nigeria and Ghana. It has over six hundred and thirty (630) retail distribution centres across Nigeria, its main operational base, and 8 branches in Ghana. Outside Africa, it also has presence in New York and Cayman Island.
For a corporation this big to have their domain expired, its a shame.
Well, their website is still accessible from another domain name: ubagroup.com but they still link to ubaplc.com from there.
