On 24th February 2006, I speculated: Ghana’s Buzz GSM to go GPRS?
Well, the cat is out of the bag. Not only is Mobitel Ghana unleashing mobile Internet, they have rebranded thier cellular service to “tiGO”.
I am not very sure if tiGO applies to both post-paid and pre-paid packages from Mobitel Ghana as they had hitherto branded their services Mobi GSM and Buzz GSM, respectively.
The TV ad I saw a few minutes ago lists their value-added-services, as been the new cellular experience viz:
– International roaming
– National coverage
– IDD at local rates
– Best tariff
– Internet
– Per Second billing
– Games
– Share Your Credit
– CRBT – Caller Ringback Tone
– Picture, Video & Sound Messaging
Now, note that the highlighted ones are new. Internet & MultiMedia Messaging (MMS) could only have been possible on at least, a GPRS network. This gives more credence to my speculation:
I am thinking this “new cellular experience†is GPRS (or EDGE / UMTS
at best).
What could be better? Nothing.
I wish tiGO all the best.
I’m a subscriber by the way. So a tip for this free promo wouldn’t hurt. 😛
Update (March 2nd, 2006):
A text message came in this morning from Mobitel Ghana
“Dear Valued Customer, Mobitel and Buzz GSM brands have evolved and become tiGO. tiGO will deliver ‘The New Cellular Experience’. 027 is tiGO…”
