SMART TV, Ghana’s latest digital terrestrial television service launches

SMART TV, a new digital terrestrial television service was launched today by Next Generation Broadcasting (NGB) in collaboration with Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC). The service would witness a commercial roll-out come May 2010.

Smart TV

According to Citi FM Online:

The station would offer both pay-TV service and free-to-air service of existing local stations on the Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) network.
SMART TV will initially air in Accra and Kumasi and would later be extended to other regions in Ghana in the near future.
The TV station belongs to a Swedish multinational company called Next Generation Broadcasting (NGB) which is partnering Fox International Channel as the only platform to provide Fox Entertainment in Ghana.

Pricing for the SMART TV digibox would start from GHC 89.

The features of the new service as advertised by SMART TV are as follows:

No dish required
Smart mix of local and international content
Affordable monthly subscription of GHC19
Convenient and easy to install
Crystal clear picture and sound quality
Electronic Programme Guide to plan your viewing

The TV channels advertised are:

Foreign: FOX, Showtime, Star, TRACE Tropical, Setanta Africa, BBC News, HiNolly, HomeBase, GOD TV, Kids
Local: NET2, Viasat1, TV3 Ghana, GTV and TV Africa.

Smart TV is set to launch in Kenya and Uganda later this year.

smart tv is a stitch too late. currently l have 17 active channels on my strong srt4669x reciever tracking multi tv and 8 test transmission channels from infinity. use astra 2abd satelite at 28.2e. smart should have been free. do they think they are wiser than the guys at multi tv?

  well Darlington i think i should answer dis Q. for Oluniyi, multi tv is free yes but what abt their services… so poor, quality 5% u knw why?? cus they hve a huge network problem to which no one is complaining why cus its a cheap offer they are offering us so u can’t complain. u hve to pay for quality service so they always come in handy.

YOU HAVE TO BE ENLIGHTENED. THERE IS A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PAY TV AND FREE TO AIR CHANNELS.
SMART TV LIKE DSTV, THE DEFUNCT GBS AND SKYY DIGITAL ARE PAY TV BECAUSE THE SHOW PREMIUM CHANNELS WHICH ARE PAID TO BE RECIEVED.
MULTI TV IS PURELY FREE CHANNEL TV WHICH ARE ABSOLUTLY FREE.
THE CHOICE IS YOURS CHOOSE WHAT YOU CAN OFFORD.

i live in asawasi in ksi. i hv a total of 28 channels on my smart tv. 6 free ghanaian stations, 8 no picture channels and 6 card needed channels. meanwhile my card is correctly inserted into the slot but yet the msg is “this channel is coded and needs a card”.
wow, 6 + 8 + 6 = 20(uncalled for channels)
28 – 20 = 8(only channels left)
out of the 8 remaining channels i hv, 3 which keep hibernating which leaves me very few as options. i tot i was subscribing for more channel tv. i need help urgently.

  for now their pay channels are free. they coding the pay channels, for the problem you have “this channel is code and needs a card” is because you haven’t paying for the subcribe channels. after finish with their coding and you starting paying your monthly fees you will recieves your pay channels back but for the free channels you will recieve them whether you pay or not because it is free.

I bought a decoder of Smart Tv a few weeks ago and my wife is always fighting with me because to her I have thrown my money away. The reason why my wife is saying this is that Smart Tv has nothing to offer except the old free on air TV stations. Even they cannot produce their own advertised TV stations. I think Government will have to check the inflow such stations.

Smart TV is a disgrace to the Ghanaian Corporate Community. They lied to me to buy one of their receivers promising 18 channels. Better customer service. Poor me, only the local channels, even with that, Metro TV does not come. What is the problem. I think is good you treat your customers very well. I petty myself for not buying Multi TV. I was told 7weeks ago that the rest of the channels will be coming this week. In fact this is the 8th Week.
If you are the BOSS of SMART TV then I am sorry you are not doing a good work.

  Please take it easy. Smart TV is not useless as you think. Every organisation has issues in different forms. You can still use your decoder for viewing GTV, TV3, TV Africa, Net2. Digital Terrestrial TV is the future for all, no options

    Akosua Aboagye we know that by the year 2015 all tv station in the country will be transmit in digital but for smart tv we bought it to watch the pay channels not the local channels. it is petty to go for a product which at the end of the day it wasn’t able to satisfy your need(the reason why you the product). I think this guys are not serious in business.
    Akosua how come for almost a month this guys are not able solve the so called technical problem. I think NCA have to do same it about it.

  Smart TV does not have any settings you can use. It is a digital terrestrial TV service and you need to buy their receiver. Details about CRTV would be shared soon.

  the channels on smart tv decoder are airing for free for now. Get yours now before you are left out. Everyone in ghana very soon will need the terrestrial decoder to be able to have access to even free tv channels.
