SMART TV, a new digital terrestrial television service was launched today by Next Generation Broadcasting (NGB) in collaboration with Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC). The service would witness a commercial roll-out come May 2010.

According to Citi FM Online:

The station would offer both pay-TV service and free-to-air service of existing local stations on the Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) network.

SMART TV will initially air in Accra and Kumasi and would later be extended to other regions in Ghana in the near future.

The TV station belongs to a Swedish multinational company called Next Generation Broadcasting (NGB) which is partnering Fox International Channel as the only platform to provide Fox Entertainment in Ghana.

Pricing for the SMART TV digibox would start from GHC 89.

The features of the new service as advertised by SMART TV are as follows:

  • No dish required
  • Smart mix of local and international content
  • Affordable monthly subscription of GHC19
  • Convenient and easy to install
  • Crystal clear picture and sound quality
  • Electronic Programme Guide to plan your viewing

The TV channels advertised are:

  • Foreign: FOX, Showtime, Star, TRACE Tropical, Setanta Africa, BBC News, HiNolly, HomeBase, GOD TV, Kids
  • Local: NET2, Viasat1, TV3 Ghana, GTV and TV Africa.

Smart TV is set to launch in Kenya and Uganda later this year.

    Multi TV promised us they were going to show the English Premier League but they did not. at least they have one EPL mactch a week and this weekend they showed all the Italian Serie A matches. they also showed the Belgian league, Scotish League and others. to me it is still much better than Multi. I also love their musical channel Kiss and the movie channel Silver.

    I agree perfectly with you, Kofi. i have both Multi TV and Smart TV. Now i dont even watch my Multi TV again, it is so boring. As i speak i Star, the gossip channel on Smart TV. When my kids return from school they are always glued to Kidsco. Smart is a much better option.

    I have 2 suggestions to make.
    Can you alternate Al jazeera and CNN or SKY News on the news channel?
    Also can you do the same with GOD TV by showing TBN?

      Smart TV is still in test transmission phase. The number of channels are not yet final and have been changing.

      Since Smart TV is aiming to offer the free-to-air TV channels on its digital platform, I’d say its very likely that Metro TV and Crystal TV would be added at some point.

    i have the oppotunity to receive digital channels on my digital tv without multi – tv decoder but i can only watch two channels (BBC and GOD TV) i cannot even watch any of the local channels. i’d like to know why that is so ? i am a resident of kumasi

      It appears Smart TV is broadcasting BBC World and GOD TV, unenecrypted and that explains why flat-screen TVs with in-built DVB-T tuners can receive these two channels. It has nothing to do with Multi TV.

      You would need to subscribe to Smart TV, to receive the other channels from them.

      Also, there is no reason for you not to receive the regular free-to-air Ghanaian TV channels.

        I just bought a dvb-t digital tv usb dongle from a friend and installed it on my pc at home. I scanned and had 18 channels but some are scrambled. The channels seems to be from smart tv. I know sky is also digital tv and am asking how can I get sky channels in my area. I will be grateful is anybody can help me

    anytime i put my smart tv on, the message i get is ‘hardware error’ but if i do reinstall it comes back to normal. i’ve regretted buying smart tv. pls explain.

    Hello i am Davis from Ghana and in the Ashanti region.I do not love the type of matches you telecast on the spots channel and also can you prove to us that u are real because u do not telecast all the epl matches and also u telecast it from Gtv and much people do not want what u show on sports channel.

      am in ghana not in UK. why is it that smart tv have only 2 sports channels (gtv sports+ & setanta) and is not showing Spanish league & German league.
      pls extend your sports channels else we will opt for dstv.

      My decoder was tested at smart tv office at airport west near former presidents kuffour’s residence and had 48 channels but i came home and realised only 18 channels. why?

    Why is it that Nigeqian NTA,AIT,SILVERBIRD. nd the rest of them are on scrambled,2 all position they maybe found, is it over seriousness, wickedness or greed? tell me if there’s anyway 2 get Nigeqian Newscast fta.     are they fake or real? its a BIG shame for the management of smart tv, when thier so called channels goes dead every now and then.

    how do you expect your customers to enjoy your service with the frequent breaks!

    Most of us have a problem when it comes to appreciating quality service, we’re too stereotype.
    Every organisation faces challenges in the beginning but for one to be a winner, he’ll have to stand the test of time.
    I believe Smart TV has a lot to offer its viewers. DSTV did not attain its status in a day and let’s face facts, Multi Tv doesnot come an inch close to Smart TV in terms of content, clarity, sound and picture quality.
    Smart TV is here to stay, they sure are making it happen.

For those commenting bitterly I think every organisation has its own challenges but also urge the management of smart tv rectify their service for the best though claim testing transmission. Thanks

    I have digit box I bought form Europe. I am able to get two channels i.e BBC news, God TV. Why is it that I m not able to get rest of the channels? are the rest of channels encript? or do i need to buy subcription fee?

    I’m not satisfy with your program mes.
    No Champions league, what we see is a repetition of football marches all the time,repetition of films all the time, I’m unhappy with your programs. Not all of us want your programs. As some of us like fufu, others must prefer rice, banku and tz. So please give us a channel that shows war film and chines and champions league us well.

    Big Shame to all managements of so call smart tv. I was thinking that you are the people going to give us better service, not knowing that you rather kill us. I bought it because of live matches but not dead matches. shame on you, that we did not get to watch the champion league.

    I have regreeted for buying the smart TV. so i urge all users of smart tv to stop using it and go for muiti or dstv for better service. Through me i had about 16 people who bought your so call Smart TV. And i am the same person who is going to tell them to convert to multi or dstv to watch better programs, especially football(The champions leagues, English premier leagues, Laliga, etc.

    I don’t even know the use of your gtv sports plus and Isports. Meanwhile yesterday multi tv and dstv where showing Barcelona’s match.

    Why, you’ve fail us soooooooooooo much. We the user of smart tv were expecting to watch the champion league yesterday, but we couldn’t. Why smart tv. If you can’t show us the champion league, Laliga, English premier league, then I think you are not doing us good.

    Isports and gtvsports were yesterday showing dead matches instead of Champions league. is that how you treats your clans. It was only VISAT who were showing Inter’s match. And visat is a station that everybody in ghana gets to watch provided you have a tv.

    I’m shame of the managements.

      The main games available as live are communicated weekly. Pls take note. It is EPL on Saturdays and Serie A on Sat and sun. in addition Jupiter league, J-League, MLS, Scottish

    please can i use multi TV and smart TV on one television. Can i also change the satellite location to search more stations without loosing my current Mmulti TV channels, If yes how do i go about it.

      Multi TV is on satellite while Smart TV is terrestrial. They are different and should be able to work side-by-side without problems.
      About your 2nd issue, the solution lies in investing in a motorized satellite dish system; if you are willing to invest in one. The motorized system assists with tuning between different satellites (in space).

    I have two tvs. One connected to multi tv and the other to smart tv but my technician has interconnected the two so I can watch either multi or smart tv on any of the tvs. The two tvs are in different rooms.

    David, i wld lyk u 2 find out 4rm è authorities of smart tv when specifically è monthly payments wl begin n è upcom’n channels. Ghanaians r crazy abt futbal n wants more of what is currently bin shown. 1 Epl match a wk is nt enough n even dat same match is live on Gtv. Pls find out for me.
