SMART TV, a new digital terrestrial television service was launched today by Next Generation Broadcasting (NGB) in collaboration with Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC). The service would witness a commercial roll-out come May 2010.

According to Citi FM Online:

The station would offer both pay-TV service and free-to-air service of existing local stations on the Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) network.

SMART TV will initially air in Accra and Kumasi and would later be extended to other regions in Ghana in the near future.

The TV station belongs to a Swedish multinational company called Next Generation Broadcasting (NGB) which is partnering Fox International Channel as the only platform to provide Fox Entertainment in Ghana.

Pricing for the SMART TV digibox would start from GHC 89.

The features of the new service as advertised by SMART TV are as follows:

  • No dish required
  • Smart mix of local and international content
  • Affordable monthly subscription of GHC19
  • Convenient and easy to install
  • Crystal clear picture and sound quality
  • Electronic Programme Guide to plan your viewing

The TV channels advertised are:

  • Foreign: FOX, Showtime, Star, TRACE Tropical, Setanta Africa, BBC News, HiNolly, HomeBase, GOD TV, Kids
  • Local: NET2, Viasat1, TV3 Ghana, GTV and TV Africa.

Smart TV is set to launch in Kenya and Uganda later this year.

    Look smart tv is as useless as anything u can imagine,especially that their HOMEBASE station, it if full of repetition programes. Can you imagine only 3 films are shown on this station for the past 4 days, infact it is a disgrace to GTV and the management of smart tv. I wonder if this station can get money to pay it workers,b’cos no businessman or woman will even advertise on this nertwork. Look it is only HI NOLLY that is doing well. People buy it b’cos it is does use a ”dish”,but look is the same as watching the locall tv station. PLS STOP SELLING THIS TO PEOPLE this is TV ROBBERING. WHAT IS THIS? aaaahh !!! Somebody should tell me whether there will be improvement else I will continue to advise people to use their money for better things then this useless thing call ”smart tv”.

    The Ghc 133 box is more advanced compared to the Ghc 89. It’s a different brand altogether.

      Smart TV in Ghana and Kenya are not necessarily offering the same content. You might want to enquire from Smart TV Kenya before making your decision.

    Hi, David…… i am in kumasi and i have a usb DVB T reciever, currently with 18 channels just as that of the smart tv….does ti mean that if the free to air channels on smart tv are encripted, i will loose my channels……thanks

      I’m so much disappointed buying the Smart TV decoder and don’t know why they keep selling these decoders to people.

      Whoever is the boss of smart tv should bow down his head in shame for rendering a bad service to the nation. what are they doing ? they only take people’s money & don’t do anything to improve the service. most of the stations are not working, not even the local stations & for a while now, i thought it would be improved & would get better, but rather getting worse & now they’ve taken KISS TV off, which is my main reason for buying this decoder. why ? ? ?

    As far as I have read the comments,the likes of smart tv, star dtv uganda, are nothing to believe in.
    A case in ugnda, when star dtv started in uganda, they promised heaven on earth. But we haven’t even seen a star.

    am very disappointed buying Smart Tv decoder because there is absolutely noting good in that box, because how can you box other companies free channel and our local channels and sell to the public.

    please scrap all that wasteful channels from the box and let me suggest an idea for you before it is too late and before people get to know about it. because Smart Tv for now stand no chance in comparing to any digital decoder anywhere.

    smart guys,boss,some of us in the remote part of western region are surffering when it comes to information.why?,no tv station no radio.if smart tv is a colabo. between gtv and the other then why cant it be a 100% degital so that so of can at have a tv stations to witch.if you are not having enough money to the govt. let him borrow some to help extent it to other part of the country for i am in love with your channels.please,boss,please!!

    What is free to air? Coz am scared multitv marketed like cell phone. Will one leave the dish on top of our roofs like G prime. At list smartv has a solid source.

    Smart tv why? the free to air channels are even better than the so called foreign channels.Most of the foreign channels have been repeating their programs just like METRO TV so the earlier you guys make things work, the better.One request please:kindly add one Adult (XXX) channel.
