Mobile money users in Tanzania are set to move funds directly between M-Pesa and PayPal, closing a long-standing gap between the country’s dominant payment wallet and the global digital-payments network.
Vodacom announced on 26 May 2026 that M-Pesa Tanzania and PayPal had integrated their platforms, enabling eligible customers to link the two accounts and transfer money between them via the M-Pesa Super App.
How it works
Once a customer links a PayPal account inside the app, they can deposit funds from M-Pesa into PayPal and withdraw funds from PayPal back into M-Pesa. The integration runs through guided onboarding in the Super App rather than a separate service.
Why it matters
M-Pesa is the backbone of everyday payments in Tanzania, while PayPal remains a default for freelancers, online sellers and anyone transacting across borders. Bridging the two gives that group a domestic on- and off-ramp to global commerce without a bank account in the middle.
The move lands amid a wider PayPal push across the continent, from its PYUSD stablecoin rollout into Uganda and Malawi to the friction its expansion has met elsewhere in the region.
Details still to come
Vodacom has not disclosed fees, transaction limits or a firm launch date, saying only that onboarding steps, limits and timelines will be shared through its official Tanzania channels.
“Digital connectivity is creating more opportunities for Tanzanians to participate in the global economy, whether through freelancing, online business, content creation or cross-border commerce,” said Tulisindo Mlupilo, acting M-Pesa director. “Through this partnership with PayPal, we are making it easier for our customers to send, receive, deposit and access funds across platforms with greater convenience and confidence.”
Otto Williams, PayPal’s senior vice president and regional head for the Middle East and Africa, said the tie-up answered rising demand for cross-border tools. “By enabling easier transfer of funds between PayPal and M-Pesa, through account linking, this partnership will help create a more seamless and convenient cross-border payment experience for customers in Tanzania,” he said.
