Samsung has unveiled the Galaxy S26 series, its most AI-integrated smartphone lineup to date, with pre-orders now open in South Africa from R20,999.

The Galaxy S26, Galaxy S26+ and Galaxy S26 Ultra were announced on 26 February 2026, with Samsung placing its Galaxy AI platform at the core of the user experience. Rather than leading with processor speeds and megapixel counts, Samsung is emphasising intelligent, context-aware features designed to work in the background.

TM Roh, President and Head of Samsung’s DX Division, said: “We believe AI should be something people can depend on every day, designed to work consistently for everyone and without the need for expertise. With the Galaxy S26 series, we focused on making AI feel effortless, working quietly in the background so people can focus on what matters.”

What Galaxy AI brings to the S26 series

The S26 series introduces several AI capabilities designed to anticipate what you need rather than waiting for commands.

Now Nudge delivers proactive suggestions based on context, surfacing a restaurant menu when you arrive at a booking, or pulling up meeting documents as an appointment approaches. Now Brief compiles personalised daily summaries of upcoming events and actionable reminders tailored to your schedule.

Photo Assist has been significantly upgraded, allowing you to describe edits in natural language. You can ask the AI to add objects to a scene, restore missing elements in a photograph, or adjust clothing in a portrait. A new Creative Studio tool converts sketches, photos or text prompts into polished visuals within the gallery app.

Circle to Search, developed with Google, now recognises multiple objects simultaneously. Rather than circling one item at a time, you can select several items in an image for identification and shopping results in a single action. Samsung has also integrated Google’s Gemini and Perplexity into what it calls a multi-agent AI ecosystem, alongside a rebuilt Bixby that understands complex natural language commands for on-device actions.

Privacy and productivity tools

Samsung has introduced three privacy features alongside the AI capabilities. Privacy Alerts proactively notify you when apps access sensitive data. Private Album lets you hide photos and videos directly within the gallery without moving them to a separate secure folder. Call Screening identifies unknown callers, summarises their intent in text and lets you decide whether to answer before the phone stops ringing.

Document Scan uses AI to remove distortions from photographed documents and organise multiple scanned pages into structured PDFs, aimed at professionals who photograph whiteboards, receipts or printed documents rather than using a dedicated scanner.

Hardware specifications

All three models run Android 16 with Samsung’s One UI 8.5 interface and carry IP68 water and dust resistance ratings. The Galaxy S26 Ultra is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy processor with 16GB of RAM and up to 1TB of storage. Its 200MP main camera is accompanied by a 50MP ultra-wide, a 50MP 10x telephoto and a 10MP 3x telephoto lens.

The Galaxy S26+ and standard Galaxy S26 use either the Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy or Samsung’s own Exynos 2600 depending on region, both with 12GB of RAM and up to 512GB of storage. Battery sizes range from 4,300mAh on the standard S26 to 5,000mAh on the Ultra, with fast charging reaching 75% in approximately 30 minutes on the Ultra using a 60W adapter.

South African pricing and availability

The Galaxy S26 series is available for pre-order in South Africa from 26 February to 19 March 2026, with devices expected to ship from 4 March. Pre-order customers receive double the storage at no extra cost, saving up to R5,000, effectively getting the 512GB model at the 256GB price.

The Galaxy S26 starts at R20,999 for the 256GB model, the Galaxy S26+ at R25,999 and the Galaxy S26 Ultra at R30,999, rising to R35,999 for the 1TB variant. All three models come in Cobalt Violet, White, Black and Sky Blue, with Pink Gold and Silver Shadow available exclusively through Samsung.com.

The bigger picture

The S26 series arrives as smartphone manufacturers increasingly differentiate on AI capabilities rather than hardware alone. Samsung’s approach focuses on on-device processing and contextual awareness, a direction also pursued by Apple with Apple Intelligence and Google with its Pixel AI features. In South Africa, the Galaxy S flagship range competes primarily with Apple’s iPhone series and, increasingly, with Chinese manufacturers including Xiaomi and Huawei that have been gaining market share on the continent.

Samsung said 95% of Galaxy AI features on the S26 series are processed on-device, reducing reliance on cloud connectivity. This is a meaningful consideration in markets where mobile data remains expensive and network coverage is inconsistent.
