Smart TV launches in Kenya

Swedish firm Next Generation Broadcasting (NGB), operators of the Smart TV brand, have extended their digital TV service to residents of Kenya. The service was fully launched today, following a pilot phase that began since June 2010.

The pay TV operator is aiming to offer affordable TV to Kenya, and revolutionize the market. Capital FM quotes NGB Kenya Chief Executive Officer Dan Kagwe as saying:

“We have got a product that we believe suits the consumer. After research, we have seen most people do not watch more than five channels on television so it’s useless to occupy with 200 when you only watch one”

Capital FM throws more light on Smart TV Kenya’s strategy for growth:

Smart TV subscribers will purchase a bouquet of 17 to 20 high quality local and international programming, including African and Western movies, sports, news, children’s programming, and the latest updates in show business for Sh990 a month with set-top boxes retailing at Sh5,000.
Smart TV intends to invest heavily in an effort to promote local programming not only in Kenya but also across Africa.
All the current free to air channels including KBC, Citizen, KTN, NTV and K24 among others will also be available on the DTT (Digital Terrestrial Television) platform with the added advantage of being in digital quality.

Smart TV has already been operating in Ghana on pilot basis since April 2010 and would extend its services to Uganda early 2011.

Hi now am in distress coz i dnt even know if smart tv is still operational, i repaid my subscription for three months and immediately after all foregn channels vanished.am based in Thika n ts too bad that the system no longer works for me… so bad that ts even easier for me to go back analogue.

One common thread in this emails is that most people here are grumbling. To begin with you guys need to know you are paying 990 per month don’t expect super service and content for that money.
That aside Smart TV get your act right please. You would rather have three channels but try to put some quality programming (which believe me is available even for free to air programs) instead of the Spanish soaps that you have started inundating your channels with. And oh, before I forget the Sports channels suck big time.
There I go i have joined the grumbling group!!!

Mid this year I purchased a TV card for my PC.A friend of mine sold to me a USB enabled TV card known as HDTV.on plugging to my PC and scanning channels,it turned out to receive your signals and other channels.two months later you encrypted the channels.Am now wondering this was not your device in the first place,yet it turned out to receive your channels.Please advice me on what to do

I know i earlier asked u to have showtime for 24hrs, en i thank u for that. But then going ahead to replace ASN with STAR is jus the worst move. 80% of yua customers are in it for the love of EPL, en u limit it wen the season starts, really?!?!

I think smart tv is a raw deal for me the signal is good but still at most times its reception is poor.I was looking forward to watching big teams matches at backlays league and a wild life channel…hakuna.

I have had Smart TV for a month now generally without problems. Howver at times I lose the signal for local channels namely KBC and KTN whereas the others remain okay with good quality. What might the problem be?

I believe this smart tv is for kbc but times has change and you need to style up even in teams of programmes very few and not really much offered, sports channels are old style be update.Please do employ more data entry clerks to speed up activation of the decoders.

I bought your decoder on 16/06/2011 at Sarit center and upto now am still waiting for activation. I have called your office severally and all am told is – from your side the decoder is activated, that may be its may aerial or poor connection. I even involved my own technitian, bought a 15m long aerial wire but not even a alocal channel works when i involve a decoder.Pliz anyone at Donholm with smart tv assist or call 0726768808

Guys,guys,guys!Enough already!One common thing on this thread has been complaint after complaint after complaint.Just reading the thread one would get discouraged from getting connected to Smart TV.GTV collapsed coz it tried to run before it could walk,too many channels and not enough capital.Give Smart TV time to grow instead of crying foul.Personally i havent connected but am going to hook it up next week and pay for 6 months subscription and see how it goes.I am currently on the DSTV Premium bouquoet and in as much as it superior 6700 p.m. with the high cost of living in Kenya now is just too much.I was also on GTV for about 1 year and it was wonderful while it lasted(though they run away with our money!).2750 p.m. with great programming.We need to support Smart TV to provide competition for DSTV.And for you SMART TV guys pull up your socks.Address complaints promptly and let us have a truly interactive website to go to for updates.Otherwise all the best!

My set box has a brand name DigiTimes and has all the channels you listed earlier. Is it compatible with your smart card? I hope it is and if not, what do u offer in terms of service to make it compatible?

Currently it covers Nairobi but as time goes by it will cover the whole country since KBC is in the process of installing its digital hardware’s within the country before 2012. Smart TV has its own decoder called the smart TV, its digitally inbuilt thus transmissions are digital, it costs 5990 inclusive of one month subscription payable in cash or cheque, the channels on offer in the residential package called the SMART ZONE include: BBC World, Setanta Africa, ASPN (Africa sports network), Silver, Star, Hi Holly, Fox entertainment and Showtime going for 990 p.m our decoder comes with smart card that can only be used with smart TV decoder when subscription starts, all local channels are free to air and can be watched even if your account is suspended, am martin nand my number is 0726816018 .     You made us buy decoders when you said in the news on the day you were launching that it was to cover the whole of Kenya, now they are empty GTV look-alike boxes in the houses.   When we were told that smart TV was to launch in Kenya we thought that his was the case. I bought a decoder but can not use it in Nyahururu for there is no signal here this I don’t understand. Is there a possibility that the signal will get here soon? I believe the recorded is genuine for I tested it in Nairobi and it was working.

I purcahsed this unit almost a week ago, but I’ve not been successfull to get it working. It reports Weak Signal or Configuration issue with receiver. The Signal from my antenna is perfect as all local free to air channels are working fine. I even tried rasing the mast hight but no change.

Ok ,smart tv,try also to get rights for our local football league plus the EPL,then two western movie slots,one movie slot from Nigeria,three documentaries,CNN or BBC W, 2 0toons,3 sports, 1 series and all free to air channels in Kenya and The world.peg monthly fee at Kshs 1500.00 and kenyans wil migrate enmass to smart tv,DSTV wil close shop.UNLESS U SUBSCRIBE TO DSTV PREMIUM Kshs 6,000.00, you dont get value for your money.

Hi, am so happy that there’s a plan b'[ smart tv }. I visited dstv offices the other day and am sorry to say i was disappointed, the reason being i have to pay for the package which i not interested in for 6 months if i wanted their installation.I had to quit that plan and thanks God you came in just in time. Some advice to smart TV…The moment you start being vague on services thats a problem for you in the Kenyan market. I’d be interested in EPL,KPL,Rugby live matches and at times ESPN for NBA. So tell us in black or white.

Some sales girls approached me with their brochures before they launched. There were 17 channels in total. I counted 13 which are already available freely and didn’t know the other three. One was a cartoon channel but anyway i didn’t think it was worth it. Unless they added more channels after launch.

all what we need from smart tv kenya
is a running website;
point of sale of dvb t2 sets;
directly tell the public sports, entertainment and documentary channels expected for the Kes 990/=, atleast;
competition is healthy.am sure dstv is ripping me off monthly. if only the tell us programmes for that value i shall gladly dump the dish for a fair programming.
no wonder dstv put up a spiritted advert of Kes 5000/= purchase and installation at the moment.
dstv over 35 channels at kes 800/= and watching hausa, yoruba, portuguese, italian and other language which i dont understand is belying kenyans the contents. no value for the fee.
dstv should go thre equity bank or safaricom way, i.e. where the masses are by downgrading the documentary and sports channels along fta. by this more sales and viewership bracket. at kes 800/=. economy of sense if not scales.

SMART TV Kenya airs one live game every Saturday from the EPL, the good part is that they only air games featuring MAN UTD, Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool or MAN CITY. Who watches other games anyway? They also air Serie A games for the top teams including AC Milan, Inter and Juventus plus live NBA Games on there new channel ASN. Setanta Africa also airs the Spanish kings cup (copa del ray) which features clubs from Spain and you get to watch Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atletico Bilbao and Atletico Madrid among others. kamaliza unfortunately the set top boxes are not standard,star ( china) set up box are mpeg 2 and smart tv set top box are mpeg 4,thats why am not able to receive sound on my star set up box only pictures am also made to understand its a method of ensuring both companies sell their set top box

I understand they is another company from china offering the same service and have parterned with KBC,does this mean we will have to buy two set top boxes,
I have the star DVB and I can only view the smart channels with no sound,and yet all the other channels have sound including the free to air channels,
The smart tv channels seem not to include channels like discorvery channel,history channel,national geographic, do you guys plan to include these channels later
When will you guys start operations seriously,with sound ??? and how will one get the smart cards ??? with no customer care points

The mistake with dstv is that the cheap the package u pay 4 the few important channels u will watch,probably 2chns especially the package of ksh 830,which is bad,i would rather pay ksh 830 for seven channels ie the package which is currenty to dstv mobile. plz tell where ur located in mombasa.

  I doubt if you’d be able to subscribe to Smart TV with a card slot on your device. Try rescanning your receiver. It might detect the Kenyan channels after that.

  Smart Tv is currently airing one match from EPL on saturdays and From Serie A it airs one match on saturday and on sunday. It also airs NBA.
  Smart Tv Kenya has not started charging subscription but it is going to introduce MPESA pay bill system and scratch card among other modes of payment. Currently the signal is not available in Machakos but plans are underway.

  My understanding is that the info David has provided on this blog is mainly based on his experience with Smart TV-GHANA. Problem with Smart TV-Kenya is the scarcity of details which to me is not a good sign. Having their own web-site up and running will help clear the air. At the moment they are banking on the ‘Peculiar’ Kenyan love for things new.

  You don’t need a satellite dish for Smart TV. You should Smart TV directly for assistance. They would recommend the nearest retailer of their Smart TV receiver to you.
