Celtel Nigeria launches 3G

Well, the boistreous wave of third generation mobile technology is sweeping across Nigeria gradually. Celtel Nigeria has now launched its 3G service at a ceremony in Abuja last week.

It’s still in a test mode and the launch was a demo for members of the National Assembly, officials of the NCC and some stakeholders in the telecom industry.

Glo mobile and MTN have both indicated interest in upgrading their current GPRS networks to 3G, respectively. As to the economic effect this would have on Nigeria, time will tell.  One can only hope that the services would be affordable for most  users.

  1. Its a good stone at the right direction. We have long expected this from Celtel. Though the journey has not been too good for Econet, vodacom, vmobile and now celtel.

we say more grease for their elbow. as Oliver twist we still ask for more. becuase in other west african countries celtel operate there are more to customers than what we have seen so far.

Once more the 3G is a welcome development

  2. Yes i quite agree that celtel is one of the bst in nigeria. But come to think of it your tarrif in nigeria is too expensive and it makes me personally feel that your organisation is taken the situation of the nigeria system for granted. I have been to other countries and found out that your charges are cheaper than what you charge in nigeria.for instance you charge about 2shillings per second in KENYA. So we would appreciate it if you can do something about this.Moreso, your charges on text messages is still on the high side and hope that all gsm companies reduce the cost of sms.Thank you as you put this into consideration.Cheers!

  3. Glo mobile – the GSM arm of Globacom – also started the 3G trial since October and the trial is going on smoothly. I believe the company is only waiting for license now…

  4. Can someone please tell me how I can access the 3G network for, say, Glo mobile? I own a 3G phone and am beginning to wonder if it was a worthwhile purchase. Any information will be most welcome.

  5. Dave,

I’m posting this over a year after this supposed “launch” of 3G by Celtel, and the operator is not yet offering the service.

These guys are amusing! Launch indeed! More of a demo.

    Cheers!
