MTN’s acting Chief Technical Officer, John Unterhorst, in a statement released las week disclosed that the National fibre optic project will ultimately cover an area in excess of 3 500km and will span the length and breadth of Nigeria. Unterhorst explained that “a dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) system allows for an almost unlimited capacity and this is the system we have deployed to connect the already completed 2 500kms of fibre. The DWDM system can be expanded to 40 lamda’s (colour coded light waves). This equates to 400Gbits or five million simultaneous calls between each and all switching centres”.He further stated that the fibre optic network is recognised the world over as a progressive innovation in telecommunications technology that provides enormous bandwidth and low error rate output. He added that its recognised in the telecommunications industry as superior to other conventional forms of communications media. Its key selling point, he added is its unbeatable network-enhancing service quality and the fact that it ensures stable voice and data transmission services.
I wish and hope people of Nigeria engjoy the whole backbone infrastructure and it will boost Nigerian Ecomony through valuable service in Telecom Sector.
