Google News for Mobile

A few hours ago, I went to news.google.com as I routinely did, but was automatically re-directed to an XHTML version of the good old Google News. I was using Opera 8 browser and knew that what I was looking at was meant for mobiles.

Opera has the ability to render WAP pages and this is handy for WAP developers. I am not sure if this was why Google News re-directed me to the mobile version.

Anyway, I just saw from Google’s blog that the Google News for Mobile  service is new. Initially, I was confused as to whether the service was new, or that I missed it when it was launched.

The Google News for Mobile renders well on the tiny screen of my Nokia 7250i and I have spent this evening browsing through it. A click on some of the news items even takes one to the mobile version of the publisher’s website. I clicked on a particular news item, and was taken to BBC Mobile. Others lead to a cut-down version, done by Google.

This is a good development from Google, and long overdue.
