Mobile phones boom and innovate in Africa

Mobile phone usage in Africa, host of next week’s World Summit on the Information Society, is booming as companies innovate to meet the specific needs of people on the world’s poorest continent.

According to the International Telecommunications Union, the UN agency organizing the Tunis summit, the number of mobile telephone subscribers increased more than tenfold in five years to exceed 75 million by the end of 2004.
