Breaking News: Earthquake in Africa
“An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8 rocked the area around Lake Tanganyika in East Africa on Monday, U.S. Geological Survey preliminary reports say.
Details are still emerging about injuries or damages to buildings.
The quake was felt in Kenya in the centre of the capital, Nairobi, where hundreds of people were forced to evacuate office buildings.
People in Rwanda’s capital of Kigali also felt the earthquake as did people in Bujumbura, the capital of Burundi.
The USGS said the quake occurred at 1219 GMT, 3:19 p.m. local time in that region of Africa.
The epicentre was about 55 kilometres southeast of the town of Kalemie in the Democratic Republic of Congo, near that country’s border with Tanzania. “
